An Amazon Standard Identification Number (ASIN) is a type of Amazon internal catalogue number. Each ASIN is unique and always associated with a particular product or product variation. Every ASIN will be 10 digits and consist of a combination of letters and digits.
In the case of books with a 10-digit ISBN number, the ASIN will be exactly the same. For all other products, a new ASIN is created when the product is distributed via Amazon.
You can also use the ASIN to find products via the search field on an Amazon site. For example, you could search for the Amazon Echo in Black by typing in its ASIN: ‘B01GAGVIE4’.
Why are ASINs important for Amazon Associates?
If you already have experience with your own website creating affiliate links for specific products, you will have already come into contact with an ASIN. When working with special affiliate themes or plug-ins, the integration of products often uses the ASIN.
Where can I find the ASIN for a specific product?
The ASIN is specified on almost every Amazon product page. You will find it in the ‘Product information’ section, in the box ‘Additional product information’. This is also the section in which the average customer rating, Amazon best-seller rank, and further product details can be found.
A product’s ASIN can also be found in its respective URL, even if there is no ASIN listed in Product information. Because the URL of each product varies, simply look for the ten-digit combination of numbers and letters between two forward slashes (‘/’). Below you will find some example URLs, with each product’s ASIN marked in bold:
- In some cases, more characters will be visible after the ASIN in the URL, like this:
If you are not sure if you have found the right ASIN for the product and want to check, simply type it into the Amazon search box and see if the matching product is displayed.
ASINs for different product variations
As we mentioned above, each product has a different ASIN and that means every variation of a product too, for example; a different colour option or technical specification. For some products where these variations apply, the ASIN that is specified on the product page may deviate from the ASIN displayed in the URL.
Here’s an example: an ASIN is assigned to the Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime smartphone with 32 GB of memory. Since the smartphone is available with different memory space, more ASINs have been created for each option. If you select a specific memory space on the Samsung Galaxy On7’s product page, the ASIN changes in the Product information section, but not the URL. So if you need the ASIN for a specific product variation, use the ASIN that is displayed on the product page.
